Brigham (Peter Bent) Hospital opens.

January 27, 1913

Architect: Codman & Despradelle. Designed in the Classical Revival style, it is located on the former site of the Francis estate at today’s 15 Francis Street. Endowed by and named for a Boston restaurant owner and real estate mogul, it is incorporated in 1902 “for the care of sick persons in indigent circumstances.” It is the third hospital in Boston (after Children’s Hospital and the Infants’ Hospital in the West End) under the direction of Harvard Medical School. Construction began in 1911. It becomes part of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 1980.
